Yaoi Crate Has Been Acquired By The Otaku Box

Today, Yaoi Crate co-creators and brothers, Levi and Tylor Starr, are excited to announce that Yaoi Crate has been acquired by The Otaku Box!

For folks who don’t know, The Otaku Box is a physical monthly subscription service offering a loot box containing 8-9 anime-related goodies based off of favorite anime series/characters according to results from a monthly voting process. They are the only monthly anime subscription crate to also offer ecchi options.

"We are so thankful to the entire Yaoi Crate community for rallying behind mine and Levi's idea to make BL merchandise easier for fans to get around the world. We will always hold Yaoi Crate and the amazing partners and customers in our hearts," says Yaoi Crate co-creator and CEO, Tylor Starr. "We wouldn't have been able to do this without all of the support and enthusiasm for Yaoi Crate so thank you, thank you, thank you."

The team at The Otaku Box are just as excited and thankful for Yaoi Crate to be joining them.

"I am beyond excited to finally be able to branch into one of my favorite genres, and I'm busy fangirling over all the exciting stuff that I'll bring to Yaoi Crate to fulfil the dreams of fellow Yaoi lovers. I have so many ideas to put into Yaoi Crate that I'm spoilt for choice! But don’t worry, Yaoi Crate will keep its current charm that you (and I) all fell in love with," says Liz, Co-Owner of The Otaku Box. "I look forward to bringing you on this adventure with me, and I for one can’t wait to get my Yaoi Crate each month alongside all of you. A big thanks to everyone at Yaoi Crate and all its fans, I can’t put into words how truly special this moment is for me!"

We are so excited to have Yaoi Crate join the amazing community that The Otaku Box has cultivated, but we know all of you current subscribers will probably have some questions. We have put together this very handy FAQ to break down why Yaoi Crate was sold, how this will be better for subscribers, and what you can look forward to in the future!

Why did you decide to sell Yaoi Crate?

We have to be frank: we were not expecting this kind of reception to Yaoi Crate when we first started. The explosion of support and subscribers has been humbling, but with that explosion also came some drastic hurdles we weren’t ready to take on just yet. As a team of three part-time people working on Yaoi Crate, working with publishers, creating products, packing boxes, and shipping them to our subscribers began to be too much on our small team. We knew that we owed it to the Yaoi Crate community to find a way to super-serve them in the best way possible, and our current organizational structure wasn’t going to allow that. At that time, we started searching for a buyer and were grateful to have had the privilege of entertaining multiple offers for the service.

Why did you sell Yaoi Crate to The Otaku Box?

We knew when we started searching for a buyer that we wanted to sell to someone who also had experience with adult anime content. The Otaku Box is the only monthly anime subscription box to offer voting AND ecchi options for their subscribers, so we knew that Yaoi Crate would fit in nicely with their company.

In addition to having ecchi options for their main product, The Otaku Box also has their own fulfillment center and an amazing team of customer service agents who can ensure Yaoi Crate subscribers will get their boxes on a more reliable schedule and can receive world class customer service that we at Kinboshi Goods didn’t have the time to give.

Overall, selling Yaoi Crate to The Otaku Box will be the best thing for Yaoi Crate subscribers, and we are so excited to see where they go with the service.

When does The Otaku Box take over and will I be missing any crates I’ve already paid for?

The Otaku Box will be taking over in October and will be relaunching the service in November. Because of that, the final Yaoi Crate to be produced under Kinboshi Goods will be the September Yaoi Crate presented by Rotten Blossoms. This crate will be our 12th crate and we are very thankful that we have done this for a full year. At various points in our product’s offering, Yaoi Crate has offered 3, 6, and 12 month prepaid plans. Because not all of those prepaid plans will be fulfilled, folks who prepaid and would have been owed crates past September will be getting refunds on those crates that will no longer be fulfilled. We will be emailing those folks directly to let them know which crates they have paid for and which crates they are getting refunded.

Make no mistake, everyone who has paid for a crate that will not be fulfilled by Kinboshi Goods will be getting a refund on those crates. We hope to have all refunds processed by the end of October 2021.

What’s going to happen to Kinboshi Goods?

Yaoi Crate was Kinboshi Goods’ flagship product. While we had other products in the works, like Yuri Crate, we have decided to put Kinboshi Goods on a hiatus. Yuri Crate will also be put on an indefinite hiatus with no planned launch date at this time.

How does GDPR work for European Union subscribers?

Yaoi Crate subscribers who live in the EU will not have their information given to The Otaku Box per GDPR regulations.

What’s going to happen to the Yaoi Crate Store?

Whenever we have leftover items, Yaoi Crate will list those items on the Yaoi Crate Store for folks who may have missed a past crate or who may want a duplicate of an item they got in their crate. We will be shutting down the Yaoi Crate store on September 30th, so for folks who would like to get items that we have released in the past, act fast. After September 30th, all of those items will not be available again. We plan to have all shop orders fulfilled by the end of October 2021.

We would like to take this moment to thank everyone for supporting our idea. We are excited to see where Yaoi Crate goes under The Otaku Box leadership, and cannot thank them enough for keeping Yaoi Crate going.

With so much love,

Tylor, Levi, Kim, Danielle, and Haruki-kun
